AMSN Legislative Agenda

Med-surg Nurses Together are a Powerful Force for Patients When they Make Themselves Heard in a Way Policymakers Can Use.

  • 2022 AMSN Federal Legislative Agenda - The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is the only specialty nursing organization dedicated to the practice of medical-surgical nursing. AMSN and its more than 10,000 members represent medical-surgical nurses providing care to adults with a variety of medical issues or who are preparing for/recovering from surgery. Medical[1]surgical nursing is practiced in several settings across the health care industry, including hospitals, outpatient settings, in homes, via telemedicine and other non-traditional settings. The document provides AMSN’s 2022 legislative priorities AMSN 2022 Federal Legislative  Agenda.

  • AMSN Urges Congress to Support the United States Cadet Nurse Corps Service Recognition Act 2019 (H.R. 2568 and S. 12200 - As the average age of these nurses increases, it is imperative that Congress pass this legislation to provide long overdue recognition of these service members. AMSN joins with Nursing Community Coalition in urging Members of Congress to cosponsor the United States Cadet Nurse Corps Service Recognition Act (H.R. 2568 and S. 1220) AMSN Cadet Nurse Corps Fact Sheet.

  • AMSN supports the John Lewis Equality in Medicare and Medicaid Treatment Act (S.406 and H.R. 7755) - AMSN and its more than 10,000 members represent nurses who have advanced organizational, prioritization, assessment, and communication skills and are leaders in coordinating care among interprofessional health care teams. As the only national professional organization representing the voice of medical-surgical nursing, our strategic mission for patients and their access to high[1]quality, affordable health care includes addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) in policy. The John Lewis Equality in Medicare and Medicaid Treatment Act advances these goals John Lewis EMMT Fact Sheet.

  • AMSN Supports Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 Funding for Nursing Workforce, Biomedical Research, and Patient Safety Programs - AMSN is a strong supporter of several federal biomedical research and nursing workforce development programs under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The document provides AMSN’s FY 2023 appropriations funding requests AMSN-FY2023 Funding Priorities.

  • AMSN Urges Congress to Pass the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act (H.R. 1195 and S. 4182) – AMSN is deeply concerned by the alarming rise of workplace violence against our nation’s nurses and health care professionals and believe that additional federal guardrails are needed to address this growing crisis. Further, we support the advancement of the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act to ensure that health care workers have the basic protections and safety standards they need and deserve AMSN-Workplace Violence-Fact Sheet
