What is the Kathleen Singleton Organizational Award?
Throughout her career, Kathleen Singleton actively promoted the need for healthy practice environments for medical-surgical nurses and who exemplified the role of AMSN in promoting nurse well-being, organizational engagement, as well as a commitment to continuing professional growth and development.
Established in 2021, this award was named in honor of Kathleen, who served as AMSN President from 2008-2010 as well as one of the association’s most dedicated and respected leaders. Singleton recently retired after working for nearly 50 years in a variety of nursing positions. These included critical-care and medical-surgical bedside nurse, clinical nursing faculty member, and Medical-Surgical Instructor of Nursing.
The award, which is given out annually and co-sponsored by Medtronic, Inc. was launched to award facilities that have an outstanding record of promoting a healthy workplace environment that foster a ‘patient first’ philosophy.
AMSN and Medtronic recognize and celebrate organizations that actively promote the need for healthy practice environments for medical-surgical nurses and who exemplify the role of AMSN in promoting nurse well-being, organizational engagement, as well as a commitment to continuing professional growth and development.
Recent Kathleen Singleton Award Recipients
St. Francis Hospital and Heart Center was founded in 1922 by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. The hospital is New York state’s only specialty designated cardiac center, offering one of the leading cardiac care programs in the nation.

To date the hospital has achieved an incredible 14 AMSN PRISM Awards for exemplary medical-surgical nursing practice at the unit level. These awards are so significant, because they show St. Francis’s dedication to exemplary med-surg nursing—of which health practice environment is such a critical part—consistently, over many years!
